COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
NIBBLERS, ELECTRIC, PORTABLE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial
item description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-N-19703, which
is canceled.
This commercial item description covers portable electric
nibblers intended for use in cutting ferrous and non-ferrous sheets and plates.
Salient characteristics:
The nibblers supplied in accordance with this description shall be of the manufacturer’s
current design.
The nibblers shall conform to the requirements of Underwriters’ Laboratories.
Standard No. 45.
The nibblers shall have basic insulation.
The nibblers shall be double insulated or have a 2 pole, 3 wire grounding system that meets the requirement of Underwriters’ Laboratories Standard No. 490.
The motor shall be continuous duty, universal series type, operable on 115 VDC or 120 VAC.
The switches shall be of the quick-break design, conveniently located, and capable of being locked in the “ON” position. The switches shall be plainly marked “ON” and “OFF”.
All parts shall be manufactured to 8tandards that will permit replacement or adjustment without modification of the parts or the nibblers.
The nibblers shall be supplied in the following classes as specified:
Class 0 - Extra heavy duty
Class 1 - Heavy duty
Class 2 - Standard duty
Class 3 - Light duty
The nibblers shall comply with the requirement of the table.

Classes 0 and 1 handles shall be the closed loop type.
Classes 2 and 3 handles may be body type handles in lieu of the closed loop type.
The nibblers shall be constructed so as to withstand the shocks and stresses encountered during normal use.
The punch shall have a hardness of not less than 60 on the Rockwell “C” scale.
The die shall have a hardness of not le88 than 45 on the Rockwell “C” scale.
The punch and die shall be easily adjustable and easily removable without the use of special tools.
The nibblers supplied under NSN 5130-01-039-5089 shall be provided with a special head for slitting nibbling.
The nibblers supplied under NSN 5130-01-028-5206 shall be provided with a special head for corrugated nibbling.
With the exception of NSN 5130-00-989-6424, the nibblers shall be electromagnetic interference suppressed in accordance with MIL-STD-1337 for portable electric tools.
All exposed surfaces shall be smooth. Corners shall be
rounded or beveled. All exposed surfaces shall be coated, polished, or
otherwise finished in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard practice.
